Great Crested Flycatchers Love Catching Insects on the Wing

One of our prettiest summer breeding birds is the great crested flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitis). As their name implies, these colorful birds eat mainly insects, most of which they capture in flight. They will also sometimes eat fruits and berries, but not consistently. In order to successfully capture flying insects, flycatchers must be fast and they must be vigilant. This one was perched on a small tree limb and it was constantly scanning the sky. When it spotted something, it would quickly fly off, but a few minutes later it would be back, perched and scanning again. They almost never stay in one place for long when they are hunting. This time of the year there are always plenty of flies, gnats, beetles, and moths in the Florida woods, so the wait time for one to come along is never long. As someone who spends a fair amount of time in the woods, I can honestly say that I often wish there were more flycatchers in this world!
