The Little Common Ground Doves are Fast on Their Feet

If you like doves, you won’t find one cuter than the common ground dove (Columbina passerina). They are the smallest doves in North America and they are common across much of the southern United States, Central America, and northern South America. As their name suggests, they spend a lot of their time on the ground foraging for seeds, grains, and small insects. This lifestyle means that they need to be agile both in the air and on the ground. They have a strutting gait that looks like marching to me when they are moving at a walking pace. They’re also surprisingly quick when they decide to run and they can turn and dodge on a dime. It’s always interesting watching them strut around pecking at the ground for food.
