A Trip to Beautiful Cedar Key is Not Complete Without Pelicans

On my most recent trip to Cedar Key we didn’t see as many birds as I had hoped to, but there were plenty of the ever present brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis). Many of the mature birds are getting their breeding plumage, pairing off, and beginning the nesting season. There were still quite a few around, but the vast majority of the birds we saw were immature, like this one. They haven’t yet gotten the white heads and the pale blue eyes that the older birds get. This one was comfortably floating in the waters near the boat ramp enjoying some nice morning sun. It’s early enough in the year that it’s still pretty cool in the morning and so some warm sun can feel pretty good in the mornings. The bird didn’t seem to have a care in the world and at least for the moment, neither did I.
