A Trip to Beautiful Cedar Key is Not Complete Without Pelicans-Part 2

Although most of them have left now, Cedar Key and the state of Florida, actually have two types of pelicans during the winter. Besides the brown pelicans that live here year round, the American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) migrate into our area in late fall and stay with us until early to mid spring. On the last trip we only saw two of these birds from quite a distance away, but two weeks earlier I captured these two birds fishing in one of the back canals. There seemed to be lots of fish in the canal because the birds were having a great deal of success. I always find it interesting to watch these birds swallow their prey. Small fish you really don’t see, but when they get a big one you can see it moving around in the pouch and even watch as it goes down the bird’s throat. Kind of sad for the poor fish, but everyone, including pelicans, needs to eat.
