The Colorful Eastern Blue Jays Have Babies to Feed

Like many of the other birds around here, I didn’t see very much of the eastern blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) while they were incubating eggs. The eggs have now hatched and there are hungry nestlings wanting to be fed continuously. Several pairs of blue jays have been coming and filling up on seeds, peanuts, and mealworms at the feeding stations. They fill up and then head back to the nest to regurgitate to the young. I’m also seeing adult birds actively hunting caterpillars and other insects up in the trees. When they hunt they are very active, flying from branch to branch, using their excellent eyesight to spot any bugs or movement. Like at the feeders, they will hunt for a while and grab several insects. Then they will go back to the nest to feed the babies. This bird had been hunting in oak trees and I watched it capture several insects. I had been watching which direction it was going to get back to the nest on previous trips and was able to get this shot just as it headed into the sky. I haven’t seen any fledglings yet, but I hope to before too long.
