White Ibis Love to Dig in the Ground for Insects

As a general rule, the birds in Cedar Key are pretty used to people. That’s especially true for the ones in the down town area and around the dock. While I was walking down there last weekend, I came across a small bunch of white ibis (Eudocimus albus) hunting insects in the grass along the street. I stopped to take a few photos, and this one seemed to be curious about me. It came closer and closer taking turns digging in the grass and looking up at me. It came within about five feet of me and then slowly turned around and continued its feeding as if I wasn’t there. I guess it saw me as no threat. A number of the others got fairly close as well, but not as close as this one did. After they had all moved on far enough that I didn’t think I would scare them, I went on about my way, too. It was just a short encounter that allowed me to watch some interesting behavior, which is always fun for me.
