Prickly Poppy is a Beautiful Addition to the Roadside Bouquet
With flowers growing all over the place right now, it’s hard to keep track of them all. One species disappears for the year and it’s replaced by two new ones. One of the ones that has just started blossoming is the white prickly poppy (Argemone albiflora). The plant itself isn’t considered terribly attractive by most people because it is covered in spikes and prickles all over the leaves and stems. But every spring these plants produces two to three inch white flowers with multiple folded petals. The flowers are large enough to easily notice on the roadsides as you drive by them. If you stop and look more closely at them, you will find them to be quite pretty. I found this one growing along the road on my way back from town last week. There were several more blooming in the area, and lots of plants with buds, so there will be plenty more flowers coming soon.
