In the Right Light Colorful Woodpeckers Can Glow

It’s nesting time right now in north central Florida, so some of my regular birds are busy sitting on eggs and not out and about as much as usual. For that reason, I was really pleased to have a very handsome male red bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) come visiting while I was outside. He was very actively hunting for food, going from tree to tree and to some of the dead snags. He left and came back several times and I suspect he was taking food to his mate. At one point he was working away at the top of this snag. The light was shining on him in such a way that his beautiful red head and belly almost glowed. I processed the image in such a way as to emphasize that glow. I had actually taken several shots of him there as he worked the wood, but I just loved the way he looked right at the camera with his head cocked in this one. These birds can be such entertaining clowns that it’s always a pleasure when they come around.
