Colorful Blue Jays are Often Noisy, but They Do Have Peaceful Moments

The blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) have finished their breeding season and they and their offspring are now back out in the woods. Almost any time I’m outdoors in the daylight, I can hear their calls and lately it’s rare for me to go birding in the yard without seeing at least one. Their voices and calls are actually quite interesting since they make a wide variety of sounds. They can sound almost like a hawk or they can sing a very melodious song. They aren’t quite as talented as the mockingbirds, but they are close. That’s why I had to get a shot of this bird as it sat quietly and looked almost contemplative. That didn’t last long, though. Another jay started calling and this one had to go see if anything interesting was going on. It’s always interesting to listen to these birds and to watch them. Some birders don’t like them much since they can be bullies, but they entertain me. Of course, I freely admit that I am easily amused.
