Beautiful Woodpeckers have been Hanging Around all Week
It’s definitely been woodpecker week, here at What Next Farm. Earlier in the week I had a great opportunity to photograph a gorgeous male pileated woodpecker. He literally flew into the picture. There is also a pair of red bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) who seem to be making this area home and have been around a lot lately. They come to the feeding station nearly every day, but I also see them feeding in the trees routinely. I always amazes me all the unusual positions that woodpeckers can get themselves into in order to grab insects. This is the male of the pair that’s been hanging around (pun totally intended), hanging from the same tree that the pileated was hunting in. I’m hoping that the red bellies are deciding to nest in the area. There are plenty of old trees on the property that provide food and great nesting places for woodpeckers. I’d love to see some young fledglings in the future.
