Ospreys are Not Surprisingly Protective of Their Hard Earned Food
While I was in Cedar Key last time I found this osprey (Pandion haliaetus) perched on a power pole finishing off a good sized fish. There were several other birds including a gull and several boat tailed grackles, also hanging around hoping to get some, too. Between bites, the osprey several times warned off the others by screeching at them. It apparently worked pretty well since all of them kept a reasonable distance. The gull and the male grackle were perched nearby while the female grackles were down near the ground waiting for pieces to fall. When osprey had finished eating, it looked up and almost licked it’s chops. I don’t think osprey can really do that, but this one would have if it could.
