Since the early spring much of Florida has been experiencing a drought. During . most of the spring we got almost no rain at all. Rivers were low, swamps dried up, and even large trees had limp, wilted leaves. There were numerous wildfires across much of the state. As summer approached and temperatures started to rise we started to get a little bit of much needed rain. Ponds and swamps still remained low or totally dried out, but other areas started to look a little better and some plants and flowers began to bloom again. Things were better, but still excessively dry. At that point we were getting some rain about once or twice a week which was better than nothing, but not our usually daily afternoon shower. Finally, in the past two weeks we have gotten quite a bit of good rain. Several times, it has rained much of the day, and it’s been raining quite a lot at night as well. Lakes and ponds are finally rising, the rivers are back up, and people who live in low areas, like my Mom, have had standing water in their yards. I’m not complaining about the rain, but it has made it hard to get outside. So Monday, at a point when it wasn’t raining very hard, I ventured out with my camera for a bit. Because it had been raining so much, many of the birds were venturing out in it to get something to eat. This little tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor), though, looked totally put out with the whole situation. It had found a fairly dry place in the foliage and had perched there with fluffed feathers looking totally unhappy. I couldn’t help but chuckle a little as I photographed it. A little bird can’t understand the overall significance of all that rain. It just knew it didn’t much like it.
