Carolina wrens (Thryothorus ludovicianus) are just fun little birds. They are small and very cute, but they can be quite outgoing and are known to build nests in the strangest places including inside houses, barns, and plant pots. They are highly insectivorous, but I have seen them take fruit, especially apple and banana, from the feeding station. The little one above was hunting from a small twig that was being supported by the viburnum leaves. It was carefully watching for signs of movement in the leaf litter underneath the tree. Seconds after I got this shot it was off after something that flew by. Carolina wrens are also exceptional singers. They have a very loud song that they typically sing from on top of a tall perch. The fellow below was just coming into the top of this tall post, where he went to singing for about 5 minutes. Even though the song is meant to mark territory, it’s a very sweet, melodious song and it’s a joy to listen to. We are very fortunate to have these birds with us all year round in central Florida and I never tire of seeing and listening to them.
