Little Ovenbirds Really Love Life in the Brush

Yesterday, as I sat in my camp chair sipping a mug of hot coffee and reflecting on life returning to normal after the holiday madness, I caught the slightest bit of movement out of the corner of my eye. When I looked over in that direction, I saw my favorite little winter bird, the ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) peeking out of the underbrush at me. Its head was cocked in a quizzical expression as if it was studying me. It sat there, completely quietly, just watching for several minutes. Eventually it decided that I was relatively safe and moved out a little further where it grabbed a white moth out of the sand and gobbled it down. It was a simple, but fun encounter and we each got to study the other in detail.
