Bulltongue Arrowhead Makes Beautiful Flowers Most of the Year

Winter is not the time of year that you generally think about beautiful flowers blooming, but in Florida we have quite a few winter bloomers. There certainly aren’t nearly as many blossoming now as there will be in a month or two, but I was actually surprised by how many flowers there were when I visited Sweetwater Wetland Preserve last week. One aquatic plant that was blossoming in quite a few places was the bulltongue arrowhead (Sagittaria lancifolia). Not only is it quite pretty to look at, but it provides shelter for the birds and insects and provides nutrition to some ducks. If you enlarge the image you can see a small insect of some sort hidden in the buds near the top of the plant.
