Beautiful Glossy Ibis Have an Interesting Way of Feeding

Glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) and actually all ibis in general, are a lot of fun to watch while they are feeding. They are highly active as they wade through the shallow water or strut along on land. All the while, they are also constantly probing into the water, silt, or sand with their very sensitive beaks. With their beaks alone they can find small seeds, bits of detritus, fish, and insects. This bird was very actively working its way along the bank of one of the waterways at the Sweetwater Wetland Preserve. As you can see the surface of the water was completely covered in duckweed giving the bird no visibility under the water at all. Yet it was hunting very successfully, all by sense of touch. It was impressive and very interesting to watch to me and totally commonplace to the bird.
