Ruby Crowned Kinglets are Colorful Even in Winter

Yesterday morning I went out to the Sweetwater Wetland Preserve to enjoy a beautiful morning and see what wildlife was out and about. It’s the time of the year when we have quite a few winter birds here, and I know that Sweetwater is usually a good place to see a variety of interesting birds. It was most definitely a good birding day for both migrant and resident birds. One of the migrants that I saw quite a few of were the ruby crowned kinglets (Corthylio calendula). There were several hotspots for these birds in the park, but this one was my favorite due to the beautiful reddish orange cypress trees that the birds were in. The birds themselves are still an attractive greenish yellow despite the fact that they are in their nonbreeding plumage. The color combination of the trees and the birds is quite striking. Besides, the area had several types of berries available that the birds seemed to be enjoying even through they are primarily insectivores. The food kept the birds active and made them quite a lot of fun to watch.
