Little Common Ground Doves Can be Very Loving

One of my most regular avian visitors are the common ground doves (Columbina passerina). They are year round residents who frequently come to the feeding station. They usually browse on the ground, mostly for smaller seeds. They are very social birds and most often come by in small groups that range from two individuals to six or eight. They are rather interesting in their interactions. Sometimes they scuffle a lot. Several birds will be feeding and suddenly, for no apparent reason, a fight will break out. It’s usually short and I’ve never seen one get hurt, but it will happen over and over. On the other hand, they can be very loving towards their mates, perching together, feeding each other, and preening each other. This pair seemed to be very attached to each other. They were perched up in one of the oak trees, and kept very close to each other. Each time one moved, the other followed and when not moving around they just sat, looking at each other. Eventually one flew off. And guess what? The other quickly followed.
