Blue Dashers Love to Hunt From Any Perch

Some of the dragonflies that I see, especially those that live right at the water’s edge, rarely go down to the ground. Instead, they tend to rest and hunt from branches, twigs, and, grasses, and other types of vegetation. My property is a lot drier, though, and I get only a few types of dragonflies, the most common of which is the blue dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis). These guys don’t seem at all fussy about where they land or where they hunt from. I see them from the ground to well above my head regularly. This male was very busy flying from place to place, landing for a moment, and then moving on again. During the short period of time I could keep track of him, he landed and took off again from four or five different places. When he landed on these leaves not far from my feet, I snapped a couple of shots before he was off again. I have no idea why he was so restless, but it was definitely interesting to watch.
