I Absolutely Love the Little Tree Frogs

One of my favorite little creatures out here where I live are these little squirrel tree frogs (Hyla squirrella). In some of my past posts, I have misidentified them as green tree frogs. I have since learned that green tree frogs also have the brownish stripes on their sides, but have green bellies, while squirrel tree frogs have light colored bellies. Squirrel tree frogs are only about three inches long when full grown and they are a brilliant green above (just like the green tree frogs). Their little suction cup toes allow them to cling to all sorts of surfaces including glass. They are nocturnal and eat insects, so somehow it’s not surprising that they love to get on the windows when the lights are on. The lights attracts lots of insects, especially moths, and these little guys are very fond of moths. It’s really cool to be able to watch them hunt moths both from the outside (where these photos were taken) and from the inside. Watching them outside shows the top of the frog and gives some interesting contrasts since an independent light source is usually needed. Where you place the light can really change what you see and what kind of photos you get, too. Watching from the inside shows the frog from underneath, which is an unusual and pretty cool view, especially when they jump. It also gives an interesting view of those little suction cup toes in action.
