My First Fledgling Towhee Was Very Exciting

Yesterday I showed you guys the male eastern towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) collecting meal worms to take to is mate and his hungry nestlings. I was hoping that when the youngsters fledged the parents would bring them to the feeding station. I was expecting that it wouldn’t be too long since most birds don’t stay nestlings for very long, but I hadn’t expected that it wouldn’t be today! So imagine my surprise when a streaky looking bird that looked a lot like the towhees showed up and was eating seeds. A couple of years ago when my first towhee showed up I was thrilled when spring came and a mate came along. I was so hoping that they would choose to stick around and raise a family here, but unfortunately, shortly after she arrived, they both left to go nest elsewhere. That meant I never got to see the little towhees. That’s why I was so excited to see this youngster today. I always enjoy watching the babies grow up and watching their antics, but when I get to see a new one it’s always especially interesting.
