The Amazing Honey Bee Carries Colorful Pollen on it’s Legs
Honey bees never cease to amaze me. Until about a year and a half ago, I really didn’t know all that much about them except that they are crucial for pollinating crops and other plants. Then my friend, Mary, got into bee keeping. I went out to her place one morning and watched (and photographed) her son setting up some of their original hives. I must say it was fascinating and I learned a lot. Since then I’ve been learning more and more about them. One of the things that I think is pretty cool about them is that they have sacks on their legs that allow them to carry pollen from one flower to another and eventually back to the hive. The pollen is fed to the immature bees that are too young to leave the hive yet. Pretty much the entire life of bees revolves around producing and caring for offspring. I guess that is pretty important when your lifespan is only a couple of months.
