Eastern Grey Squirrels Love Wooded Habitats
It’s been a while since I really worked on something artistic, and I had started working on some habitats in their animals images before leaving for Alaska. This is one that I had started on before we left, but I was having trouble deciding what habitat photo(s) to use. I decided to try a couple of new ones this afternoon, and finally found something that worked well. Most people are familiar with the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) since it is a common inhabitant of backyards (especially backyards with bird feeders) and municipal parks. But in the wild, their habitat usually consists of wooded areas that provide nesting areas and materials as well as food sources (ie. nuts or fruit). Out here in the sandhills they love our oak trees for their acorns and the pines for pine nuts. That’s why I finally decided on an oak tree to represent the habitat inside the animal.
