The Bright Sun Brings Out the Shine of these Beautiful Snails
These little manatee tree snails (Drymaeus dormani) are fairly common around here since they graze on the algae that tends to grow on buildings, decks, fences, trees, and pretty much anything else that is stationary. The humidity and the sun provide great conditions for the growth of this algae, and algae is great for snails. When things get too cool or too dry for these guys, they will attach themselves to a smooth surface with mucus that seals them inside their shells. This snail had sealed itself onto on of my deck posts last week. It was there for several days until it rained. During the rain it pulled itself loose and headed on it’s way. The evening I shot these, the sun was glowing brightly and really brought out the shine on the shell.
