Probably the Last Beautiful Blue Dasher of the Season
Before we got slammed by two major hurricanes in two weeks, our supply of summer dragonflies was dwindling. Since the storms, I’m not seeing dragonflies at all except for one very large, dark colored species that I haven’t had the opportunity to get any photos of. I suspect that the high wind and heavy rain from the storms killed off the few individuals that were still hanging on. I shot this image of a blue dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) about a week before the first storm, Helene. I was actually surprised that this individual was still in very good condition. Most of the dragonflies this time of year are usually pretty tattered and missing pieces of wings. I did some creative processing with this shot to help bring out the oranges in the wings and on the body. I liked the way this process made the wing edges stand out just a little bit.
