Where There Are Insects, There Are Also Colorful Predators
When I was photographing the chaste trees and the many types of pollinators that were attracted to them, I also found this beautiful male blue dasher dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis) scoping out the area. He had the perfect perch on top of one of the trees, so he could watch all the activity. During the time that I was there, he flew around the area a couple of times, always returning to that perch. Even on those flights, he didn’t go after anything. I’m not sure what that means. Perhaps he was already full, or maybe he didn’t want to get stung since most of insects there were bees or wasps. Or I could be totally wrong, but whatever the reason, all the bees and wasps remained safe, at least during that time frame.
