Perspective Brings Out the Great Beauty of Common Bahia Grass
One of the things that I have really enjoyed while working on my photography has been learning to see the world in new and different ways. When I first started doing this seriously, most of my photos were of pretty common things taken at the usual angles in the usual settings. But as I progressed, I joined some groups, looked at other people’s work, and read as much as possible (I still do all of that). All of that has changed my perspective on a lot of the world.
One example of seeing things differently happened one afternoon while I was in the yard playing with the dogs. The grass had gotten kind of long (I probably should have been mowing instead of playing), and I noticed that I was getting little black bits from the grass on my pants and shoes. That gave me the idea to take some shots of the common lawn grass. I started by getting down at ground level and then I put the macro lens on the camera. That’s when a whole new world of grass opened up to me (I knew there was a good reason not to mow!).
Bahia grass is one of the most common grasses for lawns and for hay down here in the southern US. It grows well in our climate and in our sandy soil. It can handle the hot summers, and the torrential afternoon showers. It doesn’t like to get too dry, but most of the time that isn’t a problem once summer really starts. Most of us see Bahia grass every day, but would you even recognize it here???
