Nature Photography: Be Prepared
Being a nature photographer is loads of fun, and is always a different experience every day. On any given outing you may or may not find what you were looking for or you may find something totally different and unexpected. Sometimes you may not find anything you want to photograph, but I have to say that rarely happens. Usually something turns up. Frequently when I head out to take some photos, I don’t have any specific subject in mind and sometimes I didn’t intend to take any photos that day but I spot something on my way somewhere. I always make sure that I have my camera and lenses available whenever I go out. A lesson I’ve learned the hard way (missing shots I would have like because of not having my gear)!
For example, the picture above I took on my way home from a doctors appointment. It was such a pretty afternoon, the cows looked so content grazing in such a nice green field it just called out to be captured. While I was there, I also happened to notice some pretty wildflowers in the ditch alongside the road. I always hate to pass by beautiful flowers because some of them last all season, and others last only a few days.
If you want good photos keep two basic principles in mind. First, keep alert. There are photo opportunities all around us. We just have to notice them. And we have to have our gear with us. So second principal; be prepared. You never know when you might want to shoot.
