The Colorful Red Bellied Woodpeckers are Preparing for Spring
The birds have been very active lately and loads of birds are coming to the feeding station. I’ve seen a couple of new species that I’ll be presenting soon, but today was all about woodpeckers. There were two of these gorgeous red bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) that alternated between feeding in the trees surrounding the feeding station and actually going down and helping themselves to seed and suet. They seem to prefer the unshelled peanuts and corn but they were even eating some seeds. I suspect that the two of them are a breeding pair that are getting ready to start a family. That requires a lot of calories for nest building, and later egg incubation and feeding of the young. Apparently the birds are also in agreement that spring is on its way.
