Grasses are Beautiful When Perfectly Lit Up
Headed home one evening at dusk, I rounded the corner and saw two long sprigs of Johnson grass (Sorghum halepense) catching the last of the afternoon light. The green, yellow, and brownish seeds were picking up the light perfectly. It almost glowed and it caught my artist’s eye. I’ve magnified the effect somewhat in post processing to add to the drama, but this is essentially what I saw. Interestingly, Johnson grass is considered highly invasive, but it used to grow very thickly on that corner. Over the years it has dwindled to just a few sprigs popping up each year. It’s very near the Gothe State Forest, so I don’t know if the Forest Service is working at containing it, or if it’s just dying back naturally.
