Carolina Chickadees are Active and Curious Little Birds

One of the most interesting birds to watch is the Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis). They aren’t the flashiest birds or the most colorful, but they just embody fun. They fly around from place to place, often making sudden turns or hovering over an area before landing. They skip and jump around in the trees and on the feeding platforms, and are capable of all sorts of acrobatics. They rarely perch anywhere for very long and even when eating they tend to grab a morsel and fly off to eat it. Right now they are saving some of the food, and watching them find the perfect place to stash it is very interesting. They’re also really curious birds. Whenever I put out some sort of new food or a new feeder the chickadees are the first ones to try it out. For example, they quickly learned to drink from the moats on the tops of the hummingbird feeders. They were actually using the feeders before even the hummingbirds were. It’s a rare day that I don’t see chickadees out in my yard, and I genuinely enjoy having them around.
