One thing that Florida has plenty of are wading birds. We have an abundance of water both fresh and salty, and that attracts birds of all sorts, but especially wading birds. Some are only here seasonally, while others, like this willet (Tringa semipalmata) live here year round. Willets like to wade in shallow salt water and use their long beaks to probe the bottom for marine invertebrates and small fish. Because they use sensors in their beaks over eyesight to find food, they can be found feeding even at night. In fact, when breeding, the female usually tends the nest during the day and the male at night. The bird not on the nest spends most of its time foraging. This bird was wading in the shallows just off a small sand spit in Cedar Key. It was late afternoon and the water was reflecting the surrounding foliage beautifully. The water was also creating lovely reflections of the bird when it stood still. It was quite beautiful watching this bird wading around, probing and feeding, accompanied everywhere by its nearly perfect reflection.
