The Beautiful Boys are Growing Up!

The two male cardinal chicks from Momma and Poppa’s first clutch are still hanging around. It’s actually pretty unusual that Poppa has not run them off yet. I guess he’s okay with them being here since the food and other resources are plentiful. I can’t imagine that he will let them stay through the winter, but who knows. I’m enjoying having them around, though. They are both pretty outgoing and they keep me entertained. I’ve enjoyed watching them go from the brownish red of the females to the bright red of the mature males. As you can see, they still have a few brown feathers, and they’re still working on their black masks. I can no longer really tell them apart like I could while they were changing. In fact, I wouldn’t even be sure that both are still around except for the fact that they frequently show up together (and like most siblings, they love to squabble). It’s been interesting watching them grow. I’m not at all sure how much longer they’ll be around, or how much longer I’m going to be able to tell them from Poppa, but I will continue to enjoy their company for however long they’re here.
