Colorful Red Bellied Woodpeckers Love Many Habitats

Most of my bird images from Cedar Key involve water birds or at least some type of bird I don’t see often on my property. There are sandhill near Cedar Key, but the island itself is lower and much wetter than the sandhills habitat. The last time I was out in Cedar Key, though, one of our best sightings was this male red bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus). Although I have seen these guys out there before, I don’t see them nearly as often as I see them here on my own property. The thing that I found interesting was that it was climbing up the trunk of a palm tree. In itself, there’s nothing unusual about that, either, but I found it incredibly refreshing to be able to see the whole bird so clearly without leaves and branches in the way! Between that and the lovely afternoon light, it was a wonderful photo opportunity.
