Northern Cardinals are Great Parents

Tis the season for breeding birds. Fa la la la…. Many of the birds in the south are now getting well into the breeding season, including our handsome northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis). Having watched these birds for many years, including being able to monitor several nests, I can attest to what wonderful parents they are. The adults are very devoted to each other and to their nestlings. Once eggs are laid, the nest is almost never left unattended. Both parents sit on the nests, but females do more than the males. Males spend most of their time finding food which they will bring back to the sitting females and nestlings. Today I watched this male come and go several times which in itself was not unusual, but each time he left with food in his beak. Cardinals usually eat their food where they find it, so when this happened over and over, I could only conclude that he was taking home to the wife and kids.
