This Beautiful Swallowtailed Kite Loves a Little Morning Solitude

Every spring the swallow tailed kites (Elanoides forficatus) return to Florida to breed. For the past few years there has been a pair that nest in the woods near my house. I frequently see one or both birds soaring above the road in the mornings when I head out to work. If I get up early enough for the sun to be rising, at least once a year I see one perched on one of the dead tree snags near my road. The bird is always by itself and always has a quiet, relaxed demeanor. Sometimes it is preening, but other times it just seems to be relaxing for a few minutes before starting the day. It’s always a special treat to see it there, but this year it was especially nice because of the beautiful sunrise that was happening behind it. I love the tranquility of a beautiful sunrise, but I’m definitely not a morning person, so seeing one is always special. When you give me a beautiful bird enjoying the time too, I’m in total heaven!
