A Wonderful Encounter with Beautiful White Tailed Deer
On the same afternoon as the lovely sunset over Lake Wauberg, I had several fun nature encounters with animals, as well. While I was hiking I came across an armadillo rooting around in the leaf litter in a stand of palmettos. Another fun encounter was when I met this white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) doe and last years fawn grazing near the trail. Most of the deer around here are pretty skittish since deer hunting is a huge sport in this area, but these two seemed to know they were in a protected area in the Paynes Prairie State Park. The doe was more wary than the fawn, as you can see, but if you watch closely, you’ll notice that the youngster almost always has one ear cocked towards Mom in case she decides to bolt. Shortly after I filmed this video a couple came along on ebikes, and off the deer went. However, when I retraced my steps when headed back to my truck they were both back out grazing in the same field.
