Everyone Loves Wonderful Hummingbirds

Who doesn’t love seeing hummingbirds? They fascinate us with their bright, beautiful colors and their ability to float in place while they feed or explore. That’s why yesterday was National Hummingbird Day. As usual, I’m a day late for the celebration, but I did want to commemorate the day. After all, I’m one of the many who loves to watch these little bundles of energy. This one, an immature male ruby throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), was hovering in a small spot of sunlight in the shaded forest, and it made his green back, head, and tail feathers almost glow. That glistening color, the incredibly rapid movement of the wings, and the amazing ability to hover like that had all of my attention. Here in Florida the only hummingbirds that we get are the ruby throats, but it doesn’t matter the species, they are all just tiny little works of art and definitely deserve a day of their own.
