Mourning Doves are Quite Beautiful During a Sunset

This evening as the sun was going down, I ran outdoors to finish up a task I had started earlier. I hadn’t planned on doing anything but finishing my work when I noticed a mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) perched in one of my trees. It was actually rather hard to miss since it was singing its sad sounding song very loudly. I looked up at the bird and the stormy evening sky, and quickly realized that it would make a really pretty photo. I ran inside to grab my camera hoping that the dove would not leave while I was inside and I got lucky. It was still there and still singing when I came back out. I took a few shots, finished up my chore, and returned to the house. About 10 minutes later the sky had darkened and I looked outside to check on the dove. It had gone, probably off to roost somewhere nearby. There are several of these doves that live in the area and I see them frequently during the day, but it was unusual to see one so close to dark.
