The little Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) are definitely really funny characters. You never know for sure what they are going to do. They are highly adept at making sudden turns, stops, and drops when flying. When up in the trees they are quite the little gymnasts and will hang upside down, sideways, or in a cockeyed mess that resembles a bad game of Twister. This pose is relatively tame compared to the acrobatics these little birds can perform. The bird was interested in checking the bottom of the dead branch in hopes of finding some insects, larvae, or eggs and was considering the best approach. It wasn’t long before it was bent over sideways, poking and prodding at the decaying wood.
