A Young Gull Hunting Insects was Interesting to See

The last time I was out in Cedar Key, I spent most of my time watching the dolphins play and herd fish. When they were not where I could see them, I was watching what the birds were doing. At one point I watched this young laughing gull (Leucophaeus articilla) catch an insect right out of the air. The bird had just taken off from the dock when it suddenly came to a nearly complete halt in mid air. It made a grab for something that I couldn’t see and then flew on again. I really wasn’t sure whether it had caught anything or not until I looked at the photos and could see it in the gulls mouth. I still can’t identify what the insect was, but it was good sized. I had just started to try to shoot a few in flight shots as the gull took off, so I was lucky to catch both the halt and the and the triumphant flight onward in one burst of images. All in all, it was an interesting evening of watching ways that nature’s creatures feed themselves.
