Beautiful Grey Catbirds Have Returned to Florida

Avian fall migration is now in full swing, and any time I go outside, I never know what I will see. I’ve seen several new birds that I know are just passing through, but some of my winter favorites are also back. A few weeks ago I saw the first ovenbird of the season, and now the grey catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) have arrived. I knew they would be here any time since the beautyberries are getting ripe. After their long trip, the catbirds are hungry and they love to fill up on beautyberries. I will see more of them in the next few weeks while the berries are around. After the berries are gone, I will see less of the birds. They will still be around and I will hear them often, but they will stay hidden in the bushes much of the time. This one was perched on a small snag near a berry bush scoping out the surroundings to make sure it was safe. The way the sun and shadows were playing on it gave the bird a bit of a blue tint that was very attractive.
