Beautiful Red Bellied Woodpeckers Just Seem to Love Life

Like people, many birds seem to have different personalities. Some are serious, some are aggressive, some are shy and reclusive, and some just always seem happy. Most of that depends on the species, but individuals don’t always follow the rules. One group that seems almost always to have a happy demeanor is the red bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus). They go about their business, like other birds, but they do it with energy and style. Frequently when they show up they almost seem to be clowning around. They call out, they tilt their heads, they will even sometimes perch right above my head and play peek-a-boo. I know it’s not really a game, they are deciding whether or not I am safe to be around. But they do it with such a happy look. This male was no different. He is a regular visitor, and he knows that I pose no threat, so he perched quite close and just seemed to smile. Before long he was off and into the peanuts, but it was great fun having this short interaction with him.
