Thanks to our semi-tropical weather and many different habitats, Florida is home to a lot of colorful and truly beautiful birds. One of my personal favorites is the little white eyed vireo (Vireo griseus). It is an insectivore that likes to live in deciduous forests with thick underbrush. It’s usually found around the edges of the underbrush or in the tree canopies hunting. It’s bright yellow chest contrasts wonderfully with its bluish back and wings, but it’s most striking feature by far are those light blue, almost white, eyes. This bird was living near the trail head at the Withlacoochee Bay Trail, in Inglis. There was another bird singing in the woods behind it, and this one was very interested. It kept cocking its head and peering off into the forest trying to spot its rival. Then it would sing its song back. Neither bird actually moved, but the conversation was intense.
