The Pelicans are Always Beautiful in Cedar Key

It would be a highly disappointing day if I ever went to Cedar Key and didn’t see any brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis). They are always at the docks and the fishing pier, but they’re also frequently in lots of other places, too. A couple weeks ago I went out for a guided walk and went into some areas I hadn’t been to before. It seemed like everywhere we went where there was water, there were pelicans. Interestingly, though, all were brown pelicans with no white pelicans out and about that day. These three were enjoying the afternoon light off the beach in front of a row of interesting condos. There were also several more drying their feathers out on the fishing dock nearby, and all of them seemed to be comfortable, happy (i.e. well fed), and contented as the end of the day approached. The light was gorgeous and the temperatures were perfect, so honestly, I was pretty contented, too.
