Grey Squirrels Love Other Treats Besides Seeds

A lot of bird watchers don’t much care for eastern grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis), but I don’t mind if they show up to the feeding station to get their share of the snacks, so there are always a few that hang around. As most people know, they are very fond of bird seed; especially sunflower seeds and peanuts. But they actually eat quite a few of the things that I put up. In addition to seeds, I always put out dried mealworms and various types of fruit. Most commonly it’s banana slices, but it may also be oranges, apples, and I used to put out grapes, but I don’t any more because I don’t want the dogs to get into them. Of those various treats, the mealworms and the oranges are their favorites (they also really like mango when I have it). This was one of the females who frequented the feeding station over the summer while she was nursing young. She absolutely adored mealworms, and in typical squirrel fashion, she would sift through the food pulling out the mealworms and tossing away the rest. Now that the breeding season is over, she still shows up from time to time, and she still picks through for favorites, but that once again includes seeds and fruit as well as mealworms.
