It’s Uncommon to Find Ground Doves Up in the Trees
The adorable little common ground doves (Columbina passerina) are one of my most consistent feeder visitors. Normally they arrive in the area in a loud flapping of wings and land the ground or in the underbrush near where the food is. If they land in the underbrush, they usually strut out into the open once they feel it’s safe. Sometimes I don’t hear the ruffle of wings at all and they just show up from in the weeds and brush. Very rarely do I see them up in the trees and it’s even more rare to see them resting up there. As their name suggests, they spend most of their time on the ground. But a little while back, I noticed this one perched and looking very comfortable up in one of my viburnum trees. The day was one of our cooler ones, and the little bird appeared to be warming itself in the sun. This isn’t the first time I’ve ever seen one up in a tree, but they never seem to stay put up there very long. I headed inside about 10 minutes later, and this one was still up there, and still really enjoying that sunlight.
