Oven Birds Absolutely Love the Underbrush
Last winter I had a little oven bird (Seiurus aurocapilla) that stayed here for the nonbreeding season. It was the first time I had seen an oven bird, and I was totally taken with her (honestly, I don’t know if the bird is male or female, but it gives me a feminine vibe). At first, she was extremely shy and I’d only get small glimpses of her. As she got more accustomed to being here, she got braver and I was able to get some decent photos and identify her. I have no way of knowing for sure, but I think the same bird is back again this year. She’s far less shy than she was last year and has never minded me being out there. She still likes to hang out in the heavy undergrowth that is close to the feeding station. Last year I tried numerous times to get photos of her where she lived, to no avail. But this year, I finally managed it. Here are a couple of the better images. The undergrowth definitely made getting these a real task, and I threw out several of the others I took at this time because she was nearly invisible and was covered by the vegetation. As you can see, her coloring gives her a real advantage when it comes to avoiding predators.
