Afternoon Rains Can Result in Some Beautiful Flower Photos
I think it’s safe to say that everyone loves a beautiful flower covered in glowing raindrops. That’s one of the reasons (plus the cooler weather after a rainstorm) that I like to head out for a hike after a a rain. If it has rained too hard some of the flowers can be damaged, but if it’s been a nice steady rain the flowers will be covered in perfect little raindrops. If you get lucky enough to come across a plant with a lot of textures like prickly poppy, or hairy stems and buds like this twiggy mullien (Verbascum virgatum) they can be even more striking. I took this shot back in March after a day where it had rained most of the day. Towards late afternoon the rain stopped, but the skies stayed kind of cloudy. The cloudiness helped to mute some of our harsh Florida afternoon sun and made it a perfect time for a short hike. I didn’t go far because I didn’t want to be way out in the woods if it started to rain again, but even on a short hike, there were plenty of gorgeous wildflowers covered in raindrops. This was one of several that I photographed that afternoon without ever being more than a half mile away from the house.
