This is the Week for Colorful, Patchy Babies
I’m not seeing much of Momma and Poppa cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) out at the feeding station these days, which I’m sure means that they are working on their second clutch right now. They were very successful with the first clutch since there are at least three immature birds who are coming to the feeding station right now. There’s at least one female (maybe two, but I can’t tell), and two males who are in the process of molting into their mature plumage. Patch here, has lot more color on his chest than his brother, who is already getting the black mask on his face. They’re easy to tell apart. Before long, they will be moving on to establish their own territories and will start their own families next spring, so I’m enjoying their presence while I can.
